"The bitter taste of alcohol distracted me just as much as the burning sensation in my throat, before the warmth settled in my stomach.
“Where is your wife?” I asked, unable to help myself.
“She left, they all did. It’s just me and my closest friends now.” He said with a languid gesture towards the bottles.
“I’m still here,” I reminded him.
Oscar looked at me through a crown of long, dark eyelashes. “Are you?”
I squirmed in my seat, focusing on the bottle in my hands. “I’m here now, am I not?”
“That you are,” he sighed with a finality that made it clear, that he would let go of the topic for now. “So, my friend, tell me what horrors keep you awake tonight. Is it the horrid wallpaper of your chambers? I always suspected.”
The corner of my mouth quirked up, and I huffed out a laugh. “The wallpaper has done nothing but exist, I assure you.”
“Crime enough, if you ask me.” He took another swig, this time more paced."
